Apocalyptic city (VR)
Despite a piece of work that was made during the second year of college, I did make this setting myself (shown as the top video) alongside an ongoing group project (the second video above). The project was to go in a group, choose roles on terms on what each of us will do in terms of planning and production. For instance, I was doing some pre vis for the planning stage, and during the production process, I helped form the smaller objects. While me and two others helped form the simpler VR setting (as you can see as the second video) I did make a VR setting of my own, so I can advance my own 3D and VR skills.
When this brief was out, it was during the later stages of the final major project which the other two team members wanted to prioritise. While this was the case, this is where I formed my own environment, consisting of buildings, roads and many objects, after finalising my own environment, I have felt more confident in modelling, texturing and VR ever since. By the time my other team members have fulfilled their final major project, we made a start on the practical itself, forming a more straight forward setting consist of some buildings, cars and a few smaller assets, it was my own VR experimentation that helped me take part in this group project more comfortably. Both VR environments were made by using Maya alone, forming many still 3D models, texturing them and then render them into After Effects via an image sequence.
However, to add the interactive VR effect, we used a spherical camera to enable the viewer to see all around the environment, and then we use the Spatial Metadata Media Interjector to create the interactive aspect. Overall, it was one of those experiences where it was hard at first but got easier as time went on, creating a Maya VR environment is easier than it is at first glance, and it was one of those projects which I couldn't jump straight into because the rest of the team wasn't ready yet (which is a weakness of mine, not matching the work speed of my other teammates). But I have gained more confident in terms of texturing, VR and teamwork, boosting my experience and skills, even our VR project was showcased within our college's open day, to have a go with looking at the world around you. Both settings I do like too, the models done by me and the others look realistic and the texturing is rather convincing, plus I do like the scale of both settings too, so overall, these two worlds have helped me with the formation of my latest VR project within the second year of university. This can also be a good lesson, whenever a group project is not ready to thrive yet, do something in your own time to build up your won skills in preparation for a current group project.
As mentioned, this brief took place as the final major project was still present, the final major project was around a few weeks before this VR project was present. In my group project VR world, it was made roughly within two weeks after the final major project was out the way for most of us. This would also explain my practise VR world had more compared to our group project result, I finished my final major project during the early days of the VR environment. This means my practise VR world took about a month to make. I believe the group project would have had more substance if the VR project was given more time, or if we gave ourselves more time.
